The Spiral Spook is a topwater walk-the-dog fly that cuts sharply side to side with the classic “spook” action that drives fish wild. It is an excellent choice for any species that feed on baitfish on the surface.
Each fly has a wide gap Gamakatsu hook that drastically improves hookup ratios over the previous hook. The most effective way to set the hook is with an extra-long strip set. Trout sets and short strip sets just don’t move the thick foam body enough to pull the hook into the fishes mouth very well.
If you want colors other than what I have listed on the website, please contact me at fishchaseflies@yahoo.com.
This fly does take some skill to work properly, so make sure to practice the cadence, try slower and faster strips until you see what gets the fly working side to side the best. Use a loop knot, and monofilament/nylon tippet and leader. The softer or more supple your tippet is, the better they will walk side to side – I like 15-20lb Orvis Super Strong Plus tippet for most of the small sizes. Using very short, fairly sharp strips and keeping your rod tip in the water are the real keys to getting the best action.
I currently hold the exclusive rights to manufacture my Spiral Spook fly pattern and Flymen Fishing Co. no longer has the rights to manufacture my fly, if you purchase these flies anywhere besides my website, be sure to inquire if they got them directly from me to ensure you are receiving a fly tied by myself, mine are night and day better than the ones Flymen have been selling without my approval. I terminated my contract with Flymen Fishing Co. effective February 1, 2024. If you have the receipt for purchasing these flies from Flymen or one of their retailers and are not satisfied with the quality, please send me an email at fishchaseflies@yahoo.com or message me @fishchaseflies on Instagram and I will replace them at a steep discount.
If you have any problems with flies you purchase from me, please reach out and I will make it right no matter what the issue is.
To fish this fly, use a loop knot and a floating weight forward fly line, preferably with a short taper. Use supple monofilament or nylon tippet, and do short, sharp 1-2″ strips with your fly rod tip just barely touching the waters surface to prevent the fly line from swinging back and forth
My line weight recommendations are:
40mm Spook Size 2 hook – 4-5wt
45-50mm Spook Size 1 hook – 5-6wt
55mm Spook Size 1/0 hook – 6-7wt
65mm Spook Size 2/0 hook – 8-9wt
80mm Spook Size 4/0 hook – 9-10wt
90mm Spook Size 5/0 hook – 11-12wt
